The Kevin Higo era with the Grande Prairie Storm has ended.
Higo, just over half a season through the third year of a three-year contract with the Storm, was relieved of his duties today.
Taking the helm of team will be Matt Keillor. Matt has served as an assistant coach with the Junior A hockey club for the past two seasons, as well as head coach of the Grande Peace Athletic Club Midget AAA Storm.
Storm president Murray Toews said Keillor’s presence not only locally, but at the provincial level, has been instrumental in developing the local Midget AAA program.
“We look forward to working with Matt and supporting him during his transition to head coach at the Junior A level,” said Toews. “Matt brings a new level of energy to lead the team through the second half of the season as the Storm work toward a position in the post-season. “
Right now the team is sitting in sixth place with a record of 7-22-5 for 19 points
During his tenure with the Storm the team had a record of 33-108-13 finishing in eighth place in the Alberta Junior Hockey League North Division in both 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.
“We would like to thank Kevin for his time with the Storm and wish him well in his future endeavors,” said Toews.
Keillor will make his first appearance behind the bench as head coach this weekend at Revolution Place when the Storm host the Lloydminster Bobcats in games 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
