Storm Go Purple For Family Violence Month

In support of Family Violence Prevention Month, the Grande Prairie Storm hockey team will be wearing purple ribbon helmet stickers this weekend to raise awareness and education in the Grande Prairie area.

“We are reminded that everyone has a responsibility to end family violence in Grande Prairie by focusing efforts to increase awareness and promote public education on these crimes,” said Odyssey House Child Care Coordinator Lorraine Millions.

Family violence can happen to anyone, regardless of their age, ethnicity, education, sexual orientation or gender. It happens to couples who are dating and to those who are married or living together. It also happens to children and seniors.

“Let’s work together and continue to have the conversation, this is not a closed-door issue anymore,” said Millions.

Odyssey House, the local Grande Prairie Women’s shelter, has a 24 hour crisis line that anyone can call – 780-532-2672 for support around family violence.

The Storm host the Brooks Bandits on Friday and the Okotoks Oilers on Saturday in Revolution Place Arena. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.

Prior to Friday's game there will be a short pre-game ceremony to recognize the event.
